The National Reference Laboratory for Breast Health provides women and their doctors the information they need to prevent breast cancer and restore breast health. The only laboratory focused exclusively on breast health, the CLIA-registered National Reference Laboratory for Breast Health combines patented sample collection procedures using proprietary methods, FDA-cleared medical devices, innovative genomic technology, and insight from expert pathologists to identify personalized breast cancer prevention and treatment solutions.

Founded in 2011, the National Reference Laboratory for Breast Health provides innovative testing services and lab reports that integrate family and genetic history with objective cytopathological information to provide women and their healthcare providers early, accurate, and actionable results and risk insights to help prevent or effectively combat breast disease.

From establishing a baseline evaluation of breast health at a woman's annual gynecology visit, to targeted high risk screening, genetic profiling, and ongoing monitoring of breast health for cancer survivors, we are leaders in comprehensive breast health testing services and solutions.

Leadership

Recognized innovators in breast health

Founder and CEO, Dr. Steven Quay, MD, PhD, FCAP, is a board-certified anatomic pathologist, with training at The Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Chemistry department, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is a former faculty member of the Department of Pathology, Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Quay is a member of the American Society of Investigative Pathology, the Association of Molecular Pathology, the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening, and the Association of Pathology Informatics.

Dr. Chen serves as Chief Scientific Officer. Dr. Chen holds a Ph.D. degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from Michigan State University and has published extensively on Molecular Oncology. She was an Associate Professor at National Yang-Ming University, Taipei, before working in the research department at Nastech Pharmaceutical Company.

Vickie Johncox joined The National Reference Laboratory for Breast Health as Laboratory Manager in January 2013. With over 25 years clinical cytology experience, including management, sequence analysis, tissue culture, histology, and antibody development, Ms. Johncox has worked in private industry, research, and academic teaching institutions; her most recent experience comes from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, serving as Cytology Supervisor from 2009-2012. Ms. Johncox is certified by the American Society of Pathologists’ Board of Registry as a Specialist in Cytotechnology. Recent areas of publication in cytology include quality assurance, telecytology, and Pap HPV genotype analysis. Ms. Johncox has a Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics and Cell Biology from the University of Minnesota and is a graduate of the School of Cytotechnology, State Laboratory of Hygiene, University of Wisconsin.

Accreditation

The National Reference Laboratory received CLIA certification in 2012, recognizing our professionalism and adherence to standards. Our Certificate of Registration number is 50D2024381 from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA). We also hold a state medical laboratory licenses from California, Florida, Rhode Island, Maryland, and Washington.
